Ospedale Civile di Venezia, Hospital in Venice, Italy
The Ospedale Civile di Venezia is a public hospital in the Castello district of Venice, housed within the historic complex of the Scuola Grande di San Marco. The site brings together medical wards and older structures, including a medical library, an anatomical theater, and a pharmacy museum.
The building of the Scuola Grande di San Marco was originally built for a Venetian brotherhood and converted into a military hospital under Napoleon around 1807. By 1819 it had become the city's main hospital, and through the 19th century several smaller hospitals across Venice were gradually brought under its roof.
The facade of the Scuola Grande di San Marco, which serves as the hospital's main entrance, faces Campo SS. Giovanni e Paolo. Many Venetians walk past it daily without pausing at the ornate doorway, which stands as a quiet boundary between the old city and a working public institution.
The hospital can be reached on foot, by boat, or by bus, and a nearby pier makes it easy to arrive by vaporetto. The library and museum spaces are not open every day, so it is worth checking opening days in advance before planning a visit to those areas.
The medical library, reached by a staircase designed by Longhena, holds around 8,000 old books, some dating from the 16th century. The ceilings of that room were decorated by craftsmen who specialized in historic gilding techniques, known in the Venetian dialect as 'indorador'.
