Sanctuary of Valinotto

The Sanctuary of Valinotto is a baroque pilgrimage church in Carignano with a distinctive hexagonal dome. Its interior displays frescoes painted by Pier Francesco Guala between 1738 and 1740 that adorn the vault.

The building followed architect Bernardo Vittone's design and replaced a small hermitage in 1738. This transformation into a baroque sanctuary occurred during a period of significant religious construction in the region.

The sanctuary is dedicated to the Visitation of Mary to Saint Elisabeth, a moment deeply rooted in Catholic devotion. This religious subject shapes how visitors experience and understand the space today.

The sanctuary is not always open and requires prior arrangement for a visit. It is advisable to contact the people managing it well in advance to schedule a visit.

The architect Vittone worried that the dome's decorations might be too elaborate and could affect how light fills the interior. This concern reveals the tension between artistic detail and how people actually experience the space.
