Spiaggia di Su Giudeu, Beach in Domus de Maria, Sardinia, Italy
Spiaggia di Su Giudeu is a curved sandy beach in the municipality of Domus de Maria, in the south of Sardinia, Italy, sheltered by a line of dunes covered with low juniper shrubs. A small island sits just offshore, visible from the shore and reachable on foot when the tide is low.
Near this beach stood the ancient settlement of Bithia, founded by Phoenician traders around 3,000 years ago and later used by Carthaginian and Roman settlers. Traces of temples and burial sites uncovered in the area show that this stretch of coast was continuously occupied for many centuries.
The name Su Giudeu means 'the Jew' in Sardinian, a reference tied to the nearby ruins of ancient Bithia and the communities that once lived along this coast. Locals and visitors alike treat the dunes behind the sand as a natural boundary, walking carefully along marked paths to avoid damaging the low-growing juniper shrubs.
The beach gets busy in summer, so arriving in the morning gives a better chance of finding space on the sand and nearby parking. Sun loungers and umbrellas can be rented on site, and a bar serves food and drinks during the warmer months.
When the tide goes out, a shallow sandbank appears between the shore and the small island offshore, making it possible to wade across with dry feet most of the way. This natural crossing only works for a short window each day, depending on the tides.
