The museum displays collections from prehistoric to medieval times, including artifacts discovered in the San Mauro valley and surrounding archaeological sites.
Following Paolo Orsi's 1884 proposal, the museum officially opened in 1950 under Mayor Filadelfo Castro's administration to preserve local archaeological findings.
The exhibition space presents chronologically organized artifacts that document the evolution of ancient settlements from the Paleolithic through Roman periods.
The museum facility provides wheelchair access and maintains regular opening hours, with visitor numbers reaching nearly 3,000 people in peak years.
The entrance hall features a restored fresco from the Crocifisso Caves, depicting the Deposition of Jesus from ancient Leontinoi.
