Colonna del Leone, Stone monument in San Babila Square, Milan, Italy
The Colonna del Leone features a stone column made of Oira material topped with a stone lion figure at its summit.
Giuseppe Robecco created this monument in 1628, and during World War II it suffered damage from bombardments until its restoration in 1986.
The stone lion figure at the top symbolizes Porta Orientale and marks a victory of the Milanese people against their adversaries.
The monument changed location in 1969 during metro construction work, moving closer to the church and away from Corso Venezia center.
The iron lion that inspired this monument was taken from the Venetians during previous conflicts, according to historical inscriptions.
