Saint Roch church, Gothic church in Caldes, Italy

Saint Roch Church is a cemetery church at the western end of Caldes' historic centre, oriented to the east and standing beside the graveyard. Its gabled facade has a lintelled portal between two square windows and a third window with a mixtilinear profile above. A Romanesque bell tower with a double belfry and pyramidal spire leans against the left flank, next to the sacristy. Inside, a single nave is divided by half-columns into three bays, with side chapels flanking the third and a polygonal apse.

A church dedicated to Saint Lawrence is first documented here in 1497. After the 1510 plague, the nobleman Bernardino Malanotti had it rebuilt and rededicated to Saints Fabian, Sebastian and Roch, invoked against the plague; the suffragan bishop Michele Iorba consecrated it in 1512. Side chapels and a sacristy were added in the 17th century, and restorations followed in 1955 and 1995.

The church is dedicated to Saints Fabian, Sebastian and Roch, invoked against the plague, and was consecrated in 1512. Since 1838 the Stations of the Cross have been set up inside, replacing those that ran outdoors along the road toward Terzolas. A gravestone set into the wall by Cardinal Ernesto Ruffini commemorates his grandmother Elisabetta Malanotti.

The church stands with the cemetery at the western end of Caldes' historic centre, oriented to the east, with a secondary entrance on its south side. The Romanesque bell tower with its double bell chamber and pyramidal spire is attached to the left flank, next to the sacristy. The interior is a single nave divided by half-columns into three bays, with side chapels flanking the third.

The bell tower is Romanesque, with a double belfry: the lower level has single openings, the upper level double openings, topped by a pyramidal spire. Its original bell was said to come from the chapel of the Samoclevo castle; it is now kept in the Tridentine diocesan museum and was replaced by another.
