Fiume e Fonti del Clitunno, Protected natural area in province of Perugia, Italy.
The Clitunno River and Springs form a conservation area in the province of Perugia featuring clear water pools surrounded by weeping willows and poplars. The site stretches along the ancient Via Flaminia with multiple natural pools fed by groundwater sources.
The springs were once navigable waters used by ancient Romans as an important transport route. A major earthquake in the 5th century significantly reduced the water flow and transformed the site's character.
The site held sacred meaning in ancient times as a place where people came to consult oracles and seek spiritual guidance. Pilgrims traveled here believing in the power of the deity associated with the waters.
The site lies along Via Flaminia between Spoleto and Foligno and offers free parking for visitors. Walking paths allow you to explore the water features and natural surroundings at a relaxed pace.
The water maintains a steady temperature of around 12 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Surprisingly, the water level and flow rate exhibit a puzzling 5 to 6 month delay in response to rainfall patterns.
