Giardini Reali

Giardini Reali is an urban park with open green spaces and structured areas right next to Saint Mark's Square. The space is crossed by long pathways lined with well-maintained plants and pergolas covered in wisteria.

Napoleon ordered the creation of this park in the early 1800s as part of his plan to transform the area around Saint Mark's Square. The original project was tied to his broader vision for modernizing Venice.

The name reflects the royal past of this place, still visible in the symmetrical layout of the plantings today. Visitors notice the geometric patterns that define Italian garden design as they walk through.

The park is easily reached from Venice's old town and operates year-round with hours that shift with the seasons. Visitors should know that pathways are narrow and seating is limited, so comfortable walking shoes are a good idea.

The park contains thousands of Agapanthus plants that put on a striking display when they bloom in summer. Growing alongside them are rare Tetrapanax trees, giving the space a somewhat tropical feel.
