Basilica di San Biagio, Cento

Basilica di San Biagio, Cento, Minor basilica in Cento, Italy.

Basilica di San Biagio is a church in Cento featuring a marble altar, stone flooring, and a bell tower designed by Pietro Alberto Cavalieri in 1760. The interior displays classical architectural elements that give the space dignity and order.

Construction of the present building started in 1732 under architect Alfonso Torreggiani and finished in 1750, with official consecration in 1764. The current structure reflects 18th-century design principles and replaced earlier versions of the church.

This church serves as the main religious center of Cento and draws the community together for celebrations throughout the year. It holds importance as a spiritual landmark where locals gather for important moments in their lives.

The church is located at Via Ugo Bassi 47 in Cento and reopened in 2018 following major restoration after a 2012 earthquake damaged the structure. Visitors should know that opening times may vary and the building is sometimes closed during religious services.

You can find a stone inscription at the altar location confirming that an early Romanesque church stood here starting in 1045. This inscription connects the modern spaces with a much older past and reveals the long history of worship at this site.
