Piazza San Francesco

Piazza San Francesco is a central square in Prato with a 19th-century obelisk standing at its center, bordered by the Church of San Francesco and the Roncioniana Library. The plaza combines historic buildings with a paved area that accommodates both vehicles and pedestrians.

The square emerged in the 13th century after dismantling part of the city walls, transforming from a flat open area into a major urban hub. This change made it a gathering point for city life.

The Roncioniana Library holds a majolica work by Andrea della Robbia from the 15th century depicting the Archangel Raphael and Tobias, which visitors can still see today. This piece reflects the artistic tradition that remains alive in this urban space.

The square has parking spaces for cars and motorcycles along with a pedestrian area in front of the church. Visitors will find this layout helps separate vehicle and foot traffic effectively.

A hidden highlight is the Dolphin Fountain by Ferdinando Tacca from the 17th century, featuring two dolphins with intertwined tails. The current version dates from the 20th century but preserves the original artistic design.
