Madonna della Greca, Medieval church in Locorotondo, Italy
The Madonna della Greca church features a bell-shaped front facade with a stone rose window and statues of Saints Peter and Paul at the corners.
Originally built between the 7th and 8th centuries, the church underwent reconstruction in 1481 under the direction of Prince Pirro Orsini del Balzo of Taranto.
The church name reflects the Greek Orthodox influence in Locorotondo and connects to the Marian traditions of early refugee communities in the region.
Located at the entrance of the old town, the church contains multiple artistic works including the Virgin of the Roses polyptych above the High Altar.
The interior pillars display varied classical motifs with carved figurines of putti and sirens, along with elements from the animal and plant kingdoms.
