Visconti Castle

Visconti Castle is a stone and brick fortress with Gothic elements located on the banks of the Adda River near Milan. It features strong defensive walls and towers positioned strategically along the river to control passage and movement.

The fortress was built before the 14th century, but Bernabò Visconti greatly expanded it between 1355 and 1370. This expansion aimed to strengthen control over the Adda River region and secure the important passage.

The chapel inside holds frescoes from the Giotto school, showing religious figures like angels and saints that reflect the artistic traditions of the time. These paintings give you a sense of the devotion and taste of the people who lived here.

Today it operates as Hotel Castello Visconteo, providing lodging while allowing access to historical sections. Visitors can explore different areas of the building and view the structure from various angles along the river.

Architect Bartolomeo Gadio recorded detailed documentation of modifications made during the Sforza period. His records offer insights into 15th-century construction methods and how the structure evolved over time.
