Labarinto della Masone, Bamboo labyrinth and cultural park in Fontanellato, Italy
Labarinto della Masone is a labyrinth and cultural park in Fontanellato that spreads across eight hectares with pathways extending more than nine kilometers through dense bamboo plantings of twenty different species. At its center stands a pyramid-shaped chapel surrounded by arcades and halls displaying five hundred artworks spanning five centuries, along with a specialized collection of typography and design work.
Publisher and art collector Franco Maria Ricci created this labyrinth to fulfill a 1977 promise made to writer Jorge Luis Borges. The project opened to the public in May 2015, transforming a commitment between two intellectuals into a lasting cultural destination.
The name reflects local heritage and the space now serves as a place where art and nature meet for visitors to experience together. People move through the bamboo paths while encountering artworks and exhibitions, making it a setting where multiple forms of expression coexist.
The complex is open daily except Tuesdays and features a restaurant, café, and conference facilities throughout the grounds. Visitors should allow several hours to explore the full extent of the pathways, as the labyrinth covers a large area and navigation takes time.
The labyrinth is designed in a star shape that creates a distinctive pattern when viewed from above. The Bodoni typography collection housed here is among the largest of its kind and draws type enthusiasts from around the world.
