Torre di Longonsardo

Torre di Longonsardo is a cylindrical granite tower standing on a rocky promontory that overlooks the Strait of Bonifacio. An exhibition inside explores the history of Sardinian coastal defense structures.

Construction began in 1577 under orders from Spanish King Philip II to defend against Barbary pirate raids. It became part of a larger network of defensive structures protecting settlements along the Sardinian coast.

The tower represents a key symbol of local heritage and shows how the town's identity is rooted in its maritime past. You can see how people today still view this structure as an important part of their community's story.

The tower is accessible by a short walking path from the town center, though the route becomes steeper as you approach the top. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for windy conditions, especially when overlooking the strait.

The tower includes an original rainwater collection system that reveals how inhabitants managed water in this remote location. The remains of this system are still visible today and show the practical ingenuity of the period.
