Funivia del Monte Capanne, Aerial lift in Marciana, Elba Island, Italy.
The Funivia del Monte Capanne carries passengers from Marciana town to the summit at 1,018 meters in individual metal baskets suspended on cables. The route links the village below directly to the highest point on Elba Island.
Planning for this cable car began in the 1970s, with the official opening occurring in 1986 following major engineering work. It became one of the first ways to make the summit accessible to regular visitors.
The lift opens access to walking trails around Monte Capanne, where visitors can discover the plant life and rock formations unique to this part of Elba. The ascent itself becomes part of the experience as the landscape shifts beneath you.
The cable car runs between April and October with regular service throughout the day, with extended hours during peak summer months from June through September. Visitors should know that the journey takes roughly 20 minutes and the summit weather is noticeably cooler than in the village below.
Passengers stand in individual open baskets rather than enclosed cabins like traditional cable cars. This exposed design creates a more direct experience and offers clearer views of the island during the entire journey.
