Ampola waterfall, Waterfall in Val d'Ampola, Storo, Italy

Ampola waterfall is a waterfall in Val d'Ampola, east of Storo in Trentino, where water drops roughly 40 feet (about 12 meters) into a natural pool. The pool has a greenish tint, and the rocks around it are worn smooth by years of steady flow.

Val d'Ampola was for centuries a route of strategic importance between Lake Garda and the Giudicarie valleys. In July 1866, a battle between Garibaldi's volunteers and Austrian troops took place very close by, near the ruins of Forte Ampola.

The Cascata d'Ampola sits in a narrow stretch of Val d'Ampola, where the Palvico river tumbles over rocks into a small pool. Visitors tend to stop here for photos or just to stand and listen to the sound of the water falling.

The waterfall is clearly visible from the SS240 road, and a parking area sits near the bridge over the river. Comfortable shoes with a good grip are a good idea, as the rocks around the pool can be wet and slippery.

Although the waterfall is easy to spot from the road, few visitors know that it is fed by the Palvico river, which draws its water from mountain springs high above the valley. Even on warm days, the water in the pool stays noticeably cold.
