Gadara Aqueduct, Roman aqueduct tunnel system between Dille, Syria and Umm Qais, Jordan.

The Gadara Aqueduct extends for 170 kilometers through Syria and Jordan, incorporating both above-ground sections and underground tunnels to transport water.

Construction of this engineering structure initiated during Emperor Trajan's reign in the second century AD, serving multiple cities of the Decapolis region.

The water system connected several ancient settlements, enabling the development of Roman bath complexes and public facilities across the region.

The tunnel sections maintain a precise gradient of 0.3 meters per mile to ensure continuous water flow through the extensive network.

The aqueduct contains a 94-kilometer tunnel section, which stands as the longest known tunnel construction from the Classical period.

Ancient aqueducts and water systems of the world

The ancient structures transported water across valleys and plains using gravity. Built by Roman and Ottoman engineers, these aqueducts stand up to 50 meters tall, crossing valleys on multiple levels of stone arches. The structures supplied cities with fresh water from distant springs and rivers.
