Byōdō-in, Buddhist temple in Japan
Byōdō-in is a striking example of Buddhist Pure Land architecture.
Constructed in 1052, it was initially a villa for the politician Fujiwara no Michinaga.
The temple's Phoenix Hall, named for its bird-like shape, is a symbol of the Heian period.
It's located in Uji, Kyoto, and is open to the public year-round.
Its image is featured on the Japanese ten yen coin.
