Settsu, Commercial center in northern Osaka Prefecture, Japan
Settsu sits on the right bank of the Yodo, a wide river that flows through the northern plain of Osaka. The urban area spreads between the riverbank and wooded hills that rise to the north.
A canal was built here in the 8th century to link two major rivers. For centuries this waterway remained a junction for trade and transport in the region.
The name derives from the old province that once covered much of the Osaka area. Along the riverbanks you can still see how people traditionally organized their lives around waterways.
The city is well served by trains and a monorail, making it easy to move between neighborhoods without a car. Walking along the riverside paths provides clear orientation and leads past parks.
The city has maintained partnerships with Bengbu in China since 1984 and with Bundaberg in Australia since 1998. These ties appear in regular exchange programs and small memorial stones set in public squares.
