Shinkansen Park, Railway museum park in Settsu, Japan
Shinkansen Park is an outdoor rail exhibit in Settsu, near Osaka, where a retired Series 0 bullet train and an EF15 electric locomotive are on permanent display. Both vehicles can be entered and explored from the inside, including passenger cars, driver cabins, and original onboard equipment.
The Series 0 bullet train entered service in 1964, when the Tokaido Shinkansen line opened ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. After decades of service, this particular set was taken out of operation and moved to its current location in Settsu.
The park is popular with families, and children often line up to sit in the driver's cab of the bullet train. The passenger compartments still have their original seats and fittings, giving a clear sense of what rail travel looked like in Japan decades ago.
The park is in Settsu and can be reached by train from central Osaka without much difficulty. Comfortable shoes are helpful since getting inside the train cars involves steps and tight corridors.
The Series 0 on display here is known for its rounded nose, which earned it the nickname "Dango-Hana," meaning "dumpling nose" in Japanese. The shape was not just a design choice but also helped reduce air resistance at high speed.
