Memanbetsu Airport, Commercial airport in Ozora, Japan
Memanbetsu Airport is a commercial airport in Ozora, Hokkaido, featuring a 2500-meter asphalt runway that handles domestic flights and international charters to Tokyo and Sapporo. The terminal provides facilities for passenger processing, baggage claim, and waiting areas overlooking the apron and surrounding fields.
The facility opened in October 1983, replacing an older location closer to the city center. Commercial operations started in September 1985, expanding connections within Japan.
The terminal serves as a gateway to the Abashiri region, where visitors encounter traces of Ainu heritage and winter festivals celebrating drift ice on the Okhotsk Sea. Local souvenir shops inside the airport display crafts from the surrounding area, reflecting the connection to traditional Hokkaido life.
Bus connections from the terminal reach Abashiri and Kitami, while a train station sits about twenty minutes away. Peak travel periods fall in summer and winter, when tourists visit the eastern coast of Hokkaido.
The facility handles over one million passengers each year and waives landing fees for international charter flights through a Hokkaido government initiative. This arrangement encourages international visitors to explore the eastern regions of the island.
