Nobeoka, Administrative city in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan
Nobeoka sits on the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture between the ocean and forested mountains, where several rivers cross through the urban area. The Gokase Gorge to the north forms a natural boundary, while the banks of the Gokase shape the western neighborhoods.
The Tsuchimochi clan ruled the area from the 12th century until 1587, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi conquered the region. The castle was then built and served as the center of feudal administration until the Meiji period.
The Imayama Hachimangu Shrine, positioned on a hill near the station, welcomes numerous residents during New Year ceremonies for traditional hatsumode visits.
The main station connects the city to other coastal towns along the east coast of Kyushu, with trains to Miyazaki and Oita. Most points of interest lie within a few kilometers of the station and are reachable on foot or by bus.
A 17-meter (56-foot) tall statue of the Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi stands on a hill near the castle grounds, weighing over 11 tons and ranking among the largest representations of this figure in Japan. The bronze figure was erected in the 1970s and is visible across much of the city.
