Nobeoka Castle・Naitō Memorial Museum

Nobeoka Castle・Naitō Memorial Museum, Historical castle museum in Nobeoka, Japan

Nobeoka Castle Museum occupies the Nishinomaru section of the former castle grounds and displays archaeological finds, historical documents, and regional cultural objects. Computer graphics and drone footage help visitors understand what the castle town and current castle park look like.

Construction of the castle began in 1603 under Takahashi Mototane, and the three-story main tower was built later by the Arima clan in 1655. These structures shaped the region's history and development for centuries to come.

The museum displays 72 carved Noh masks from the Naito family collection, dating from the late 16th and 17th centuries. These masks reveal how theatrical performance held deep meaning in the region's daily life and rituals.

The museum offers free admission and sits within a park that is easy to walk through. Visitors should allow time to explore both the exhibitions and the historic stone structures surrounding the site.

The Sennin Goroshi, a striking stone wall in the Ninomaru compound, rises about 19 meters high. This steep wall was part of the castle's defenses and reveals the engineering skill of that era.
