Mount Katamuki

Mount Katamuki rises to 1605 meters above sea level, featuring granite cliffs and steep slopes covered with dense forests of beech and hemlock trees.

The mountain formation occurred through two volcanic periods approximately 13 and 10 million years ago, creating the current geographical features of the region.

The name Katamuki translates to tilting in Japanese, reflecting the mountain's natural inclination toward the neighboring Mount Sobo in the Kyushu region.

Climbers access the mountain primarily through the Kuori trailhead, which leads through changing vegetation zones from evergreen forests to high-altitude beech groves.

The extinct Katamukiyama Caldera spans 11 kilometers by 6 kilometers, containing geological evidence of volcanic deposits from the Aso volcano dating back 3 million years.
