Bungoono, Agricultural city in Oita Prefecture, Japan
Bungo-Ono is a city in eastern Kyushu characterized by rolling hills and extensive forests that define its landscape. Mount Soboyama rises prominently along the border with Miyazaki Prefecture and serves as a natural landmark throughout the region.
The city formed in 2005 when seven smaller communities from Ono County merged into a single administrative unit. This consolidation brought together distinct local populations that had developed separately for generations.
Stone Buddha carvings dot the landscape, showing how local geology shaped religious artistic traditions over centuries. These sculptures reveal the spiritual practices that communities maintained through carving into the natural rock.
The area is accessible through several railway stations on the Hohi Main Line that connect to surrounding regions. National highways also pass through the territory and link it with neighboring municipalities.
The entire territory received designation as a Japanese Geopark in 2013, recognizing its geological significance at a national level. This status reflects the distinctive landscape formations created by volcanic activity from Mount Aso in ancient times.
