稲積水中鍾乳洞

稲積水中鍾乳洞, Underwater limestone cave in Bungo-ono, Japan.

Description

Inazumi is an underwater limestone cave system beneath the mountains of Oita Prefecture that extends over 500 meters through two main branches. Parts of the cave remain submerged in water while other sections are accessible for walking and exploring on foot.

History

The cave system formed millions of years ago as water eroded the limestone layers, which later became submerged due to volcanic activity in the region. This transformation created the underwater landscape that visitors explore today.

Culture

The temple complex adjacent to the cave features stone Buddha statues arranged throughout the grounds, reflecting how locals have long connected spiritual practice with the natural landscape. Walking through the site, you notice how religious elements blend naturally with the cave formations and surrounding forest.

Practical

The site is open daily and has parking and dining facilities on the grounds, making it convenient for a full visit. Tours are available to help you navigate the different sections safely and learn about the cave as you go.
