Hinokage, Administrative division in Nishi-Usuki County, Japan
Hinokage is a town in northern Miyazaki Prefecture characterized by mountainous terrain and river valleys. The landscape features multiple V-shaped gorges with steep cliffsides where residents have developed farmland in terraced layers.
The area once formed part of ancient Hyuga Province before two villages merged in 1951 to establish the town of Hinokage. This unification marked the beginning of its modern identity.
The town maintains three public elementary schools and one junior high school, contributing to education in the Nishi-Usuki County region.
Visitors should head to Nobeoka Station on the JR Kyushu Nippo Main Line, as there is no direct rail service to the town. From there, connections or local transport options will be needed to complete the journey.
The area is known for its terraced agricultural fields that adapt to the steep slopes of the V-shaped valleys. This traditional land use demonstrates how local communities have innovatively worked with difficult terrain.
