Umagase, Coastal cliffs in Nippo Kaigan National Park, Japan

Umagase is a coastal cliff formation in Nippo Kaigan National Park featuring hexagonal basalt columns that rise roughly 70 meters above the Pacific Ocean. The rocks create a striking coastal landscape with geometric stone patterns that extend along a considerable stretch of shoreline.

The cliff formation developed through volcanic and erosive processes spanning millions of years. This geological activity created the distinctive hexagonal column structures that are visible today.

The name Umagase means "horse's back" in Japanese, referring to how locals see the cliff's distinctive shape when viewed from a distance. People in the area use this poetic name to describe the profile that stands out against the sky.

The observation area is accessible daily and offers views of the entire rock landscape from a viewing platform. It is advisable to bring weather-appropriate clothing, as the coastal location can be windy and views are best on clear days.

The glass-walled viewing platform, installed in the 2020s, allows visitors to look out over the cliff edge and feel the full depth of the formation. This structure is barely visible from a distance, creating the sensation of floating above the void.
