Umagase, Coastal cliffs in Nippo Kaigan National Park, Japan

The Umagase cliffs extend 70 meters above the Pacific Ocean, featuring hexagonal rock columns that form a dramatic coastal landscape.

The formation of these cliffs occurred through geological processes over millions of years, creating the distinctive columnar basalt structures visible today.

The name Umagase originates from the Japanese words for horse's back, reflecting the local interpretation of the cliffs' distinctive silhouette against the horizon.

Visitors can access the observation deck daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, with a 20-minute drive required from JR Nichinan-shi station.

The glass-walled viewing platform, installed in 2022, allows visitors to experience the full magnitude of the 100-meter-deep rock formations.
