Château de Nouveau payé Shicheng

Niiro Castle is situated on a strategic hilltop with stone foundations and wooden gates that once protected multiple zones at different elevations. The site is divided into several tiers connected by ancient walls and fortifications.

The castle developed as a military stronghold during 16th century conflicts between the Shimazu clan and regional rivals in southern Kyushu. It was positioned strategically to control trade routes and territorial boundaries.

The fortress reflects traditional Japanese defensive design, with multiple gates and observation points fitted into the mountain terrain. Visitors can walk through these structures and see how the layout protected the surrounding region.

The climb to the castle follows a mountain path that takes about 30 minutes from the base of the hill. Wearing comfortable walking shoes is important, and visiting early in the day provides good visibility for exploring the terraced grounds.

The stone walls come from different construction periods and show how Japanese fortification methods evolved over centuries. Close observation reveals varying building techniques and stonework that testify to several generations of skilled craftspeople.
