Miyazaki City Phoenix Zoo is a large facility set on wooded hills near the coast, housing around 1,200 animals representing approximately 100 species in naturalistic settings. Different sections allow visitors to move through various habitats and observe animals in spaces designed for their well-being.
The zoo was established in 1971 and initially operated under private management before the city of Miyazaki took over in 2001, transforming it into a public institution. This transition allowed the facility to expand its focus on wildlife conservation efforts.
The zoo takes its name from local mythology and serves as a learning space where visitors observe how animals behave in spacious habitats designed to reflect their natural environments. School groups come regularly to understand wildlife conservation through direct experience.
The zoo is set on sloping terrain, so comfortable walking shoes and stamina for a full day are important, especially during warm weather. Shaded areas exist throughout, but it is wise to bring water and sun protection.
Each day features a special flamingo flight show in which approximately 70 flamingos perform synchronized wing movements and circle above visitors. Alongside this, elephant walking demonstrations let visitors observe these large animals in motion throughout the grounds.
