Saitobaru Archaeological Museum of Miyazaki Prefecture, Archaeological museum in Saito, Japan
The Saitobaru Archaeological Museum displays pottery, tools, and artifacts recovered from ancient burial mounds scattered across Miyazaki Prefecture. The collection features items spanning different periods of the region's past.
The museum opened in 2004 next to a cemetery complex containing over 300 burial mounds from Japan's ancient Kofun period. This era shaped the region for several hundred years.
The exhibits show how ancient Japanese communities buried their dead and organized their daily lives through objects found at nearby archaeological sites. Visitors get a sense of what mattered to people during those times through these everyday and ceremonial items.
The museum sits about one hour from Miyazaki Airport and is open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Free parking is available for around 700 vehicles on the grounds.
Visitors can enter a round-shaped burial chamber called Oni-no-Iwaya with an open entrance that reveals its interior layout and construction. Few burial mounds from this era allow such direct access inside.
