Aya Teruha Suspension Bridge, Pedestrian suspension bridge in Aya, Japan
The Aya Teruha Suspension Bridge is a modern pedestrian walkway that spans a wide valley for almost a quarter kilometer in length. The structure hangs well above a river, linking hiking routes on both sides of the valley.
The walkway was completed in 1984 to give hikers access to a newly protected forest area in Kyushu's mountains. The project was part of broader efforts to develop the region as a national park and open it to visitors.
The bridge connects visitors to the nearby forest museum, where traditional crafts and ways of life from the region are on display. The exhibits show how people here have lived alongside nature for generations.
The walkway is open year-round, with extended hours in warmer months and shorter hours during winter. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and check opening times in advance, as they may change depending on weather conditions.
The walkway has mesh-floor sections where you can see straight down to the valley below, creating the sensation of walking above the clouds. These transparent sections are particularly thrilling for those who enjoy sensing the depth beneath their feet.
