Chubu Centrair International Airport, International airport on artificial island in Tokoname, Japan
Chubu Centrair International Airport sits on a man-made island in Ise Bay, handling international and domestic flights through several terminals and runways. The facility connects check-in halls with waiting areas, shops, and viewing decks that overlook the water.
Planning for a new airport in Aichi Prefecture started in the 1990s to meet growing demand for international connections. After five years of construction, the facility opened in 2005 and took over several routes previously served through Nagoya.
The name Centrair combines Central and Air, pointing to its role as a gateway for the Chubu region. Inside the public areas, travelers find restaurants serving regional dishes and shops displaying traditional crafts from Aichi Prefecture.
Train services run directly to the terminal, linking the site with central Nagoya in around 30 minutes. The terminals offer wheelchair access, and multilingual signs help with orientation inside the buildings.
The terminal grounds include a traditional Japanese bathhouse with views over the bay, open to travelers as well. The runways were aligned so that flight operations remain safe even during strong winds from multiple directions.
