Located in central Hokkaido, Utashinai extends across 55.99 square kilometers of mountainous terrain with the Penkeutashunai River flowing through its center.

The establishment of the Sorachi Coal Mine in 1890 led to the founding of Utashinai, which received its city designation in 1958.
