Nagasaki Airport, Artificial island airport in Ōmura, Japan
Nagasaki Airport is an artificial island airport in Ōmura Bay, Japan, built on reclaimed land around Mishima Island. The terminal sits on this reclaimed ground and offers passengers views of the surrounding sea water during processing.
Construction began in the early seventies and required relocating residents from Mishima Island. The airport opened in the mid-seventies as the first Japanese airport built entirely over water.
The name comes from nearby Nagasaki city, though the terminal actually sits in Ōmura Bay. Travelers can watch aircraft land and take off directly over the water from the waiting areas, a feature of this artificial land location.
The terminal opens early in the morning and closes late at night to serve flights throughout the day. Buses link the terminal directly with several cities in the prefecture, allowing connections without transfers.
A bridge just under a kilometer long carries all land traffic from the mainland to the terminal across the bay. This connection makes every approach a landing surrounded entirely by water until the aircraft touches the runway.
