Rokkō Island, Artificial island in Higashinada-ku, Japan
Rokkō Island is an artificial landmass in Kobe Bay with a rectangular shape and residential neighborhoods in the center surrounded by industrial zones and port facilities. The island spans approximately 5.80 square kilometers and serves as both a residential and commercial hub.
Construction began in 1973 and finished in 1992, with soil and rock materials transported from nearby mountains through an underground conveyor system. This engineering approach allowed the island to be built while minimizing disruption to surrounding areas.
The Fashion Museum displays clothing and design collections that show how fashion has evolved over time. Visitors can explore garments and styles from different periods in a dedicated exhibition space.
The Rokko Liner, an automated transit system, connects three stations on the island: Marine Park, Island Center, and Island Kita-Guchi. This system makes it easy for visitors and residents to move around and access different areas.
A pathway encircling the entire island stretches approximately five kilometers and provides year-round space for cycling and walking. This loop is a popular route for daily recreation and offers views across the bay.
