Kitakyushu Airport, Artificial island airport in Kokuraminami-ku, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan.
Kitakyushu Airport sits on an artificial island in the western Seto Inland Sea and connects to southern Fukuoka Prefecture through a toll-free bridge. The runways extend over the water while the terminal remains compact and allows direct links to the mainland.
Work on this facility began in October 1994 after a development committee had started planning in 1978. The new location replaced an older facility that no longer met requirements.
The terminal houses restaurants serving Japanese and Korean dishes alongside shops that sell agricultural products and seafood from the surrounding area. Travelers can also find a viewing area overlooking the runways and the inland sea.
The facility remains open around the clock and automated buses connect travelers to several destinations in the region. Rental car services stay available until late evening hours.
The observation deck features a footbath onsen where visitors can soak their feet in warm water while watching planes take off and land over the sea. This setup makes the wait more relaxing and combines traditional Japanese relaxation with aircraft movements.
