Nabari, Central city in Mie Prefecture, Japan
Nabari is a city in the hilly Iga region of inland Mie Prefecture in Japan. The built-up area spreads across several valleys and slopes between forested ridges with rivers winding through the center.
The area served as a rest station along the Ise Kaido route during the Asuka period and offered lodging to travelers heading to the Ise shrines. The modern administrative form resulted from the merger of several towns and villages after World War II.
The city name derives from a term for gently sloping hillsides and still describes the terrain around it. Residents gather along the river during spring for cherry blossom viewing and picnic beneath the trees.
The Kintetsu Osaka railway line connects the town directly to larger centers and regional buses run to hiking trails and attractions outside the core. Access to the waterfall area in the west requires a short drive followed by a walk through forested terrain.
The Japan Salamander Center in the west documents one of the world's largest amphibian species living in the cool mountain streams nearby. The animals can grow over a meter long and are rarely seen in the wild.
