Mihata Kofun Cluster, Ancient burial mound complex in Nabari, Japan.

Description

The Mihata Kofun Cluster is a group of burial mounds scattered across the landscape in different shapes and sizes. It includes five keyhole-shaped tombs and several round structures that together show how people arranged their burial grounds during the ancient period.

History

The burial mounds were built between the 3rd and 6th centuries by local rulers as their final resting places. The different styles visible across the site show how burial practices changed over this long period.

Culture

The burial mounds here reflect the social ranks of those buried within, with each tomb's design showing the status its occupant held in their community. Walking among them gives a sense of how power and position were expressed through these monuments.

Practical

A community center at the site provides information and guidance about the mounds and the period they represent. Walking around at your own pace lets you observe the different shapes and sizes in detail.
