Oi, Coastal town in Fukui Prefecture, Japan
The town of Oi extends over 212 square kilometers along the indented ria coast of Obama Bay within Wakasa Bay in southwestern Fukui Prefecture.
The municipality system established in 1889 created several villages that merged into Oi town in 1955, with Natashō village joining in 2006.
The local community maintains traditional fishing practices and agricultural methods that reflect the regional heritage of the former Wakasa Province.
Transportation access includes services from JR West on the Obama Line and connections to the Maizuru-Wakasa Expressway and National Routes 27 and 162.
The town name appears in hiragana script rather than kanji characters, making it one of the few municipalities in Japan with this writing style.
