Nochiseyama Castle, 16th century castle ruins in Obama, Japan

Nochiseyama Castle is a 16th century fortress located on elevated ground overlooking the coastal area of Obama in Fukui Prefecture. Stone walls and foundations remain visible on the mountainside, shaping the layout of the site today.

Construction began in 1522 under Kyogoku Takatsugu, who later backed Tokugawa Ieyasu at the Battle of Sekigahara. This founder's alliance helped shape the castle's role in regional politics during its active period.

The site hosts Obama Shrine, established in 1875 after the castle stopped serving military purposes. This blending of former stronghold and religious space is visible to visitors exploring the elevated grounds today.

The site is accessible by a roughly 20-minute walk north from Obama Station along Route 162 to reach the elevated ruins. The walk involves some uphill sections to get to the stone foundations and walls.

The elevated position gave defenders a clear advantage to monitor both land and sea routes to the region. This strategic placing explains why the location mattered for coastal control during feudal times.
