Sky Gate Bridge R, Double-deck truss bridge in Izumisano, Japan
Sky Gate Bridge R stretches 3,750 meters across Osaka Bay, featuring six vehicle lanes on the upper deck and two railway tracks on the lower level.
The bridge received the Japan Society of Civil Engineers Tanaka Prize in 1991 for its engineering excellence and structural design achievements.
The name uses R to stand for three connections: Road, Railway, and the nearby Rinku district on the mainland. This bridge acts as a lifeline between the artificial airport island and the everyday rhythm of the region, with thousands of travelers and locals crossing both levels each day.
All essential utility lines run through the structure: electricity, gas, water, and telecommunications for the airport and surrounding areas. Visitors get the best view from the harbor area in Rinku Town or from trains traveling on the lower level.
In 2018, a tanker crashed into the structure on the airport's 24th anniversary, cutting off traffic for several months. This collision highlighted how dependent the entire international hub is on this single link to the mainland.
