Meijo University, Private university in Nagoya, Japan.
Meijo University is a higher education institution in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, combining ten faculties and nine graduate schools under a connected campus. Research centers for natural sciences stand beside administrative buildings and sports facilities, linked by shaded pathways.
The institution began in 1926 as a technical school and evolved over the decades into a general university with nine academic areas. After World War Two, it grew steadily through the construction of new laboratories and lecture halls.
The university library preserves collections on Japanese engineering history and offers reading spaces overlooking an inner garden. Student groups use the common rooms for teamwork, while others relax in the open areas between lectures.
Shiogama Kaguchi station on the Tsurumai subway line sits about four minutes on foot from the main entrance. Visitors find signage in Japanese and English throughout the grounds.
Two Nobel laureates in chemistry and physics, Professor Akira Yoshino and Professor Isamu Akasaki, carried out part of their prize-winning research in the laboratories here. Their discoveries on lithium-ion batteries and blue light-emitting diodes changed technology worldwide.
