Tama, Residential city in western Tokyo, Japan
Tama sits in western Tokyo and spreads over gentle hills between the Tama River to the north and forested slopes to the south. Residential neighborhoods alternate with green spaces and shopping streets clustered around several railway stations.
Eleven hamlets merged into Tama Village in 1889, which gained town status in 1964. The city of Tama formed in 1971 through consolidation with neighboring communities.
The Archaeological Center presents exhibits and artifacts from the Jomon period, while Ono Shrine maintains traditional wood carvings from the 8th century.
Three railway lines cross at Tama Center station and offer direct connections to central Tokyo in about 40 minutes. Keio and Odakyu lines run regularly and link the town to several major stations.
Sanrio Puroland is an indoor theme park with multiple levels hosting shows and parades featuring Hello Kitty and other characters. Visitors meet the characters in different areas of the building.
