Joso, Urban center in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan
Joso is an urban center in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, that spreads across flat land and is crossed by the Kinugawa River. Residential neighborhoods alternate with rice paddies and vegetable fields that make up much of the municipal area.
The settlement began in 1889 as a village named Mitsukaido and grew into a river transport node during the Edo period. In 2006 it merged with neighboring Ishige town and adopted its current name.
The place name combines syllables from neighboring towns Ishige and Mitsukaido, reflecting how two communities merged into a single entity. Many residents with Brazilian roots live here and bring their language and cuisine into daily life.
The area is easiest to explore by car, as points of interest sit far apart between agricultural fields. Visitors looking for the river will find narrow roads along the bank and some access points for walking.
Three industrial parks draw workers from South America and make this one of the most international small towns in the region. Multilingual signs and shops reflect this mix.
