Tatsunami stable

Tatsunami stable, Sumo training stable in Taito, Japan

Tatsunami stable is a training facility for sumo wrestlers in the Taito district of Tokyo, where athletes live and work under the supervision of experienced coaches. The facility includes a large clay practice ring, living quarters for fighters, and a communal kitchen where traditional stews are prepared.

Onigazaki founded the training hall in 1876 and named it after his ring name. During the 1930s the school produced two grand champions, Futabayama and Haguroyama, who both reached the highest rank in Japanese sumo.

Wrestlers live together inside the training hall, sharing sleeping quarters, kitchen, and bathroom arranged by rank. Junior fighters wake early to cook for seniors and clean the building before they are allowed to begin their own practice.

Access to training sessions requires membership in the supporters association with an annual contribution. Visitors should remain quiet and follow instructions, as fighters need to concentrate on their physically demanding work.

Two wrestlers from the school rescued an elderly man from drowning in 2024 and received recognition from the Tokyo Fire Department for their action. The incident happened during a training outing near a river.
