Nishikan-ku

Nishikan-ku stretches across 176 square kilometers in southwestern Niigata City, featuring coastal areas along the Sea of Japan and mountainous terrain near Mount Yahiko.

The territory emerged from ancient Echigo Province, establishing the town of Sone and village of Iwamuro in 1889, followed by Maki town's formation through 14 hamlets in 1891.

The ward introduced Wara Art in 2006, creating large sculptures from rice straw, reflecting the agricultural heritage of this rice-producing region of Japan.

Travelers reach the ward via JR Echigo Line from Niigata Station, with trains stopping at Echigo-Sone Station, Maki Station, and Iwamuro Station throughout the district.

The ward contains Iwamuro Onsen and Taho Onsen hot springs, while Mount Kakuda and Uwasekigata Lagoon Park provide natural recreational spaces.
