Asakura, Historical city in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan
Asakura is a city in Fukuoka Prefecture that stretches across hilly terrain between the broad river valleys of the Chikugo and forested mountain ranges. The settlement consists of several smaller districts connected by narrow country roads and agricultural fields.
The administrative unit came into being in 2006 when the town of Asakura and neighboring municipalities were merged. In earlier centuries, the area was an important passage point between Kyushu and western provinces.
The place name refers to the former presence of an imperial villa in this region during the Heian period. Visitors can still discover smaller shrines and old path markers that recall this connection.
Several train stations along the main line offer connections to larger cities in the region, while bus routes serve the rural districts. Most points of interest and craft workshops are scattered and require a private vehicle or organized tours.
The mountain slopes around the area are threaded with numerous springs whose water is used for irrigating orchards and rice paddies. Some of these springs are employed by local breweries for sake production.
