Hatoma is a small island in the Yaeyama archipelago characterized by sandy beaches and coral reefs nearby. The landmass features natural coves and is surrounded by shallow waters suitable for swimming and exploring marine life.
The island developed into a major skipjack tuna fishing port in the early 1900s, supporting hundreds of inhabitants. This fishing boom shaped the economy and infrastructure for decades afterward.
The elementary school maintains its operations through a foster program where local families host students from mainland Japan who cannot attend their regular schools.
The island is accessible by regular ferry services from Taketomi and Ishigaki. Visitors should know that accommodations and services are limited on the island itself, so nearby islands offer more options for staying overnight.
Today about 48 people live on the island and support themselves mainly through fishing and growing sweet potatoes and sugarcane. This way of life shows how residents maintain a self-sufficient community in this remote location.
