Nippori Station, Interchange station in Arakawa, Japan
Nippori Station is a transport hub in the Arakawa ward of Tokyo that brings together several rail lines using both street-level and elevated platforms. The structure includes separate sections for regional and private operators, with passages connecting the platforms for easy transfers between lines.
The station opened on April 1, 1905, connecting the growing suburbs east of Tokyo with the city center. Over the following decades, private railway companies extended their routes here, turning it into a multilevel junction.
The station forms the entrance to the Yanaka neighborhood, where small shops sell handprinted textiles and ceramics made by local craftspeople. Along the narrow lanes near the exit, workshops line up where artisans work with the same methods their predecessors used generations ago.
The elevated platforms offer direct boarding for trains heading to Narita Airport, while the street-level tracks handle regional connections across Tokyo. Signage in English and Japanese marks the routes to different lines and exits throughout the complex.
The platforms sit close enough that travelers on JR trains can look out the window and see private line trains passing alongside them. This proximity between competing operators is rare at major Tokyo stations.
